Basic Income March - 2020

On September 19, 2020 basic income supporters in more than 45 cities across the globe came together to demonstrate their support for basic income in what was the largest ever demonstration of support for basic income. 2020 was the first year that Income Movement hosted a series of events in the week leading up to the March to show the growth of the movement in the United States and beyond, a tradition that continues for all future Marches.  To accommodate COVID and ensure safe social distancing, a wide variety of event types and toolkits were included to support organizers in their planning.

Variety of Events

With COVID in place, city organizers got creative. From art installations, to bike and car parades, to street corner protests, we built the tools to make it easy for organizers to plan amazing, highly successful events while allowing for safe social distancing for community members. There was even a Digital March via the WATT app, where more than 7 million steps were taken for basic income.

Basic Income Week

2020 saw a huge growth in support for basic income. It was important to provide different ways for the community to celebrate. From a film screening, to panel discussions, to a Year of Basic Income Livestream event featuring commentary from Andrew Yang, Andy Stern, over 10 Mayors from Mayors for a Guaranteed Income and more, we came together to mark the important progress of 2020.

Eviction Installation

Millions of people across the country have had their housing impacted during COVID - an issue that could have been greatly alleviated had there been a basic income in place. Organizers in several cities created highly impactful Eviction Notice Art Installations, to get community members to think about new ways our economy could work to support our most vulnerable.

Basic Income March - 2019

In October 2019, the first ever Basic Income March was organized, in 30 cities around the globe. It was an opportunity for people long in the fight for basic income to take their passion and dedication to the streets for the first time. And an opportunity to those newly turned on to the idea via Andrew Yang's campaign to join in the fight for a new vision of the economy. New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Seoul Korea were among the cities with massive turnouts.
